The Sydney Rugby League is embroiled in a bitter dispute with one of its star players in Wests Tigers half Benji Marshall. Marshall wants to go and play Rugby Union in Japan in the off season of the NRL competition. A host of ex players have stupidly weighed into the argument supporting Benji saying the league should accommodate this request, stating that the league needs to stop the poaching of players.
There is no doubt that the League has to stop Rugby poaching the top league players. If they don't then the game is in dire trouble. This, however, is a ridiculous proposal engineered by Marshall's greedy management and the NRL should stand firm and laugh it off. David Gallop the CEO of the league made a very valid point by saying "if I worked for Coca Cola I couldn't go and work for Pepsi in my holidays". This is a perfect analogy for this situation but unfortunately he seems to be the only one agreeing with the perfectly sound reason he is preaching. Ex players may understand how tough and hard the game is, but the majority of them (and this goes for all codes) couldn't run a chook raffle in a pub, let alone multimillion dollar sporting competitions. If they want to put pressure on the League to secure the services of the top players in the code then well and good, but to endorse offers like this is a way to kill the game quicker than they are already doing so. Sportsbet.com.au has the Wests Tigers at $6.00 to win the spoon, which might be a nice bet if their star player is more concerned about what he is doing at the end of the season before this one has even kicked off.
