The American football season is just starting to get underway and what an interesting off season it has been. The obvious big news was the decision of Brett Favre to come out of retirement.
Favre will undoubtedly take his place amongst the very best in the game in the Hall of Fame, came out of retirement after he walked away from a stellar career with the Green Bay Packers. There is little doubt that this is one of the most stupid calamities in world sport, but it has certainly made for interesting theatre. Firstly Favre should have thought about his decision to retire in the first place if he had any thought of playing on. To his credit, even he is the first one to admit that. At the end of the day, however, if he wants to come out of the retirement village and risk being snapped in half by some behemoth defensive line man wanting to make a name for himself, then that is his own stupid decision. The big loser in all of this is the Packers and their half frozen, cheese head fan base, who have lost not only their greatest player but have lost him in a fashion that will tarnish something that should have been a wonderful memory. They made the right decision in the end to let him go, but their stalling has turned the whole debacle into a media frenzy and placed incredible pressure on their young new quarterback. Well, Favre is off to the Jets. A team steeped in incompetency. It would have been really interesting if he went to the Vikings or even the Bears, but it is hard to see him making any impact apart from the brutal impact of seeing his battered old body mashed into the turf in New York.
