AFL - Round Seven Preview

2008-05-02
James Potter
It is a very rare thing for a draw in Australian football. With an average of 200 points scored per game, a draw is something that happens once or twice a season at best. We have had two nail biting draws over the last two weeks that has fuelled the debate about draws in the modern day.

The argument about whether extra time should be played has been a hot topic of conversation with many players and supporters calling for an extension of time to determine a winner of regular season games. There are strong arguments for both but I am of the school of thought that the draw should remain. It reduces the reliance on 'for and against' to determine final standings at the end of the season as teams are

staggered if there are a few draws. I also think that many of the players are calling for the extra time as they think that everyone would be a winner. I can tell you there would be many players and supporters not so keen on the concept if their team was to miss the finals because of an extra time loss.

Now to this weekend's games; with only a few weeks left before the mid season break and a chance to rest players and tinker with strategy, teams are hungry to record a win. This weekend has some tantalizing confrontations and there are some juicy betting propositions for prospective punters.

I think Collingwood has a great chance of ending Hawthorn's unbeaten record. They have had an extra two day break and should be full of confidence after they got back on track against the hapless Bombers. In other games I also think the Saints will bounce back against the Tiger. The Tigers have shown great improvement over the last few weeks but I think class and desperation may prevail.

The bet of the round may be Port who has won their last two and even though they face the Bombers on the road, they should be far too strong for their inexperienced one dimensional opponent. My other bets include West Coast, Fremantle, Kangaroos, Sydney and Geelong.
