AFL - Round Four Preview2008-04-11
James Potter
Carlton fans should have been swinging from the rafters. Fevola kicks 8 goals, Judd and Stevens played dominating roles and were among the best on the ground, Eddie Betts had the game of his life and Matty Kruezer's debut was one of the most impressive I have ever seen. Alas, all of this didn't really matter as the Blues were comfortably beaten in a shootout by Essendon. I thought the Blues were specials against the Bombers. Everyone is talking up the Bombers but believe me at this stage they are far from being any good. They stick to a one dimensional game plan which involves playing a fast breaking game through the middle and simply crossing their fingers and hoping they can kick more goals than they
concede.
Carlton look well on their way to rewriting the record this weekend when they face an in-form Collingwood. A loss will make it 15 on the trot, a record for the club. Does Carlton coach Brett Ratten have a plan? You would hope so but one has to start wondering. Simply put, Carlton should be better! They need to desperately record a win and Collingwood certainly won't be as easy as Essendon should have been. This weekend I think there are some excellent games to bet on. The Richmond Tigers are, like Carlton, a disgrace and should get well and truly walloped by the Freo Dockers over in the West. Take the line bet on Freo and I would say you should feel pretty comfortable mid way through the third quarter. The other two line bets I really like involve both the Adelaide sides. Both Port and Adelaide were fantastic in the Showdown last weekend. It combined the pace of modern day footy with the hardness of years gone by. Big games like this can take their toll and I think both sides are a liability this week and should struggle with sore bodies. Adelaide especially has a huge task in front of them when they pack their bags and travel south to play the Hawks. Adelaide are consistent overachievers, as they are so well coached, but Tasmania is a hard place to play and the Hawks are certainly playing confident football. Port hosts the Brisbane Lions. Port will be very hungry and are far better than their zero from 3 record suggests, and unlike Adelaide don't have to travel. The Power will come out blazing but I expect the Lions to finish better against an emotionally and physically drained outfit. I will certainly take the head start on Brisbane and I expect them to finish strong down the outside.
