AFL - Round Three Preview2008-04-04
James Potter
The 2008 AFL season is only two weeks old and there are four teams yet to record a win; Port Adelaide, Carlton and the Fremantle Dockers. All have some problems but nothing that even comes close to the pressure the Demons are under. The Melbourne Demons are a club in crisis. They have lost their first two games by an average of 100 points and this weekend they face a Geelong outfit, which on current form, should see that disgraceful statistic increase. The Demons will start this game as the longest underdog in the history of the AFL with the line expected to be a whopping +60 points. This is a team that considered themselves a premiership threat this time last year.
The club is broke and is being propped up by the AFL, they have a very weak supporter base and the future looks gloomy at best. Much of the problem rests with the AFL who refuses to force the hand of the Melbourne-based clubs. They want to expand the game which is a good thing but they want to increase the number of teams which is ridiculous. Sixteen teams is the right number and they simply have to streamline their operation. The problem is that the Melbourne-based clubs think that there is safety in numbers and support each other's fight against relocation. The strong Melbourne clubs need to realize that they will only get stronger when the weaker ones are moved on which is ultimately for the betterment of the game. This weekend is rivalry round with some mouth watering match ups. The first game sees two unbeaten teams in the Bulldogs clash with the Saints. This is a tough game which should see the Saints get up in a tight one. The Dogs, however, are full of confidence and they could easily surprise. The Roos were very solid against the Tigers last weekend and have an excellent record against the Hawks. The Hawks' start to the season has been nothing short of breathtaking but will have to back up after a long road trip. For these reasons I think the Roos offer very good value and I will be taking the start. I also think the Blues and the Tigers will be very competitive and will also be taking the head start. All of the interstate games are fascinating and I would hate to be tipping any of these games. If pressed I would lean towards Fremantle, Port and Sydney but with no confidence. So in short I like three underdogs in the Blues, the Tigers and the Roos but would take the luxury of the line bet rather than straight out.
