Weekend Hussler - The New Champion of the Turf2008-03-01
James Potter
The Australian Horse racing public has been awaiting a new star of the turf. The last star was Makybe Diva who took everything in her stride and just kept on winning. Horses are like super models, people have different favorites. I'm not saying Makybe Diva wasn't a legend, I would be a fool to try and say anything else, but at the end of the day she didn't do it for me. Maybe it was the fishy owner and the arrogant hoop that turned me off or maybe it was the fact that I kept betting against her.
I like explosive horses that race on the pace and explode in the straight. We might just be getting one such champion in the exciting Weekend Hussler. Weekend Hussler will start a short priced favorite in the 1 million dollar Newmarket Handicap on the 8th March and should just blow them away. Jockey Brad Rawiller is a heavy weight jockey who has been starving himself to get down to weight to stay on the horse. They are a great combination because the best horse should have the best jockey and make no mistake there is no other jockey you would rather have on your horse than the in form Brad Rawiller. The 8th of March will also see the running of the Australian Cup and the Cadbury Guineas as well as the Newmarket. The Australian Cup will see Princess Coup go head to head with Sirmione after Maldevian broke down again. In this race I like the Caulfied Cup placed Douro Valley in what looms as a pretty weak field for an Australian Cup and another 1 million dollar purse. I think Largo Lad represents good value in the Cadbury Guineas but the one to beat could well be Light Fantastic. The race is an excellent guide as to what may happen as the young guns get ready for the AJC Derby. It was also great to see Racing to Win return to the track last weekend with a reasonable hit out against a dominating Paratroopers. The former Cox Plate favorite was a fantastic galloper and Australia desperately needs quality horses like this to return fit and healthy after the Equine flu debacle. News CategoriesRSS xml feed
