NBA - Who is the Value?2008-03-28
James Potter
The NBA is starting to heat up as the real contenders start to dominate. There is some excellent value out there for punters that feel they can select the winner of the NBA. No point doing it when the finals start, better to get in early take a liking to a few teams and get a good price.
Let's look at the two conferences and see if there is any value out there. Firstly in the East the Boston Celtics are clear cut favourites. This team packed with superstars has had a great year and will be tough to beat. My biggest concern is the short price you have to take. You won't be able to find anywhere near $4 and that seems too short for a team with no finals experience. The other real contender in this conference is the Detroit Pistons. I prefer the Pistons over the Celtics for three major reasons. Firstly they are at a far better price and you should be able to shop around and get them at around $8 to win the title. Secondly they have a team that has played together for many years and lastly they have recent finals experience as both a team and as a club. The only other chances at all in the East are the Cav's and the Magic. There is no doubt about Lebron James being the best player going around but the Cav's have had an up and down year and everything would have to come together quickly for them to beat the top two. The Magic lacks the experience to take the title this year but look for them in years to come. The Western conference is lot more open with still many possibilities. The three major contenders are the Suns, the Spurs and the Lakers. These three are really hard to split. The Suns are defiantly hungry and any team with such a strong list of players will be hard to beat. The San Antonio Spurs have the advantage of always playing like a team and for some strange reason I just like that when talking Basketball. The big problem for them is that they lack the depth that has always been their trademark and it's questionable if they have enough to win through a gruelling finals campaign. The Lakers seem to be the obvious choice and Kobe Bryant is just dominating. The team has rebuilt after a few years coming to terms to life after Shaq and it might be time for them to shine again. The only problem with the Lakers is that they are a clear second favourite to win the title behind Boston which makes them a little skinny. The dark horse I like the most in the West is definately the New Orleans Hornets. This is a team that isn't packed full of stars but certainly is a team moving in the right direction. This season has been far better than anyone expected and at juicy odds they could really ruffle the feathers of some of their more highly rated opponents.
