Golf - PODS Championship Preview2008-03-05
James Potter
Two good golf tournaments this week to keep all happy. The first will see the eighth playing of the PODS Championship over the famed Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort Florida. Mark Calcavecchia won last year's tournament over John Sendon even after he shot a 4 over par 75 in the first round. Somehow I think he would need to shoot a little better than that first up to win it again this year.
The betting see's last week's winner Ernie Eels at around $10. It has been known for golfers to win two weeks on the trot but it is desperately unusual unless your name is Tiger Woods. So I won't be taking the shorts on the Big Easy and will look else where for better value. You will get better than 20/1 on both Stuart Cink and Steve Stricker. Both of these guys have the sort of game that will be suited to this style of golf course. The other dark horse for the round is the Goose, that's right Retief Goosen is throwing the spikes on and is going to have a hit. At around 100/1 he must be worth a few lazy dollars. On his day this guy is the second sweetest hitter in golf and should never start any tournament at this price no matter how bad he is going. The Malaysian Open has Jyoti Randhawa opening up as the favorite at under $20. This field certainly lacks some superstars so I will be looking for a couple of proven campaigners at value. Thomas Bjorn is huge value at better than $30. I also love him at the head to head market against Dyson at Partybets.com where you can still pick up $1.91 which looms as the bet of the week. The other guy I really like is the Irish cigar smoking legend Darren Clarke. The only problem that big Darren will face will be the hot humid conditions out on the course. The conditions might leave him a little hot and bothered but if his fitness holds up you can pick up a very nice price at around $40. Good luck and good swinging this weekend.
