NBA - Heated MVP Race!2008-01-23
Jesse Penfold
The NBA has a seen an amazing resurgence in talent recently, resuting in one of the most competitive seasons in years, with more MVP contenders than you can count what does this mean? POTENTIAL VALUE if you do some analysis.
With no clear cut certainty to take home the award, or for that matter no clear cut frontrunner, there are a lot of good prices out there for players with a serious shot at taking home the trophy. So first lets break down each player, starting from the favourites to the longer shots: - Kevin Garnett Putting up 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 3.6 assists perr game, Garnett's numbers are actually quite modest by his lofty standards. However his intensive personality and leadership, as well as defensive presence have been just as important to the Bostons Celtics league leading record as any of his statistics. With his teams record, as well as receiving the emotional vote, it would be hard to pick against Garnett if Boston can hold onto their place in the standings. - Kobe Bryant It is incredible at this point to think that Kobe hasn't already won an MVP, but between sharing the spot light with Shaq, and his teams recent struggles, the leagues top performer has been blocked from this individual award. This might be his best chance to change that however, with a solid young team contending in the West, and averaging 27.7 point, 5.8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals, Bryant has taken a much more unselfish role this season in pursuit of team success. His only drawback will be whether LA can hold their footing in the West, and whether his past discretions may effect his votes. - Lebron James Satistically the most dominant player in the game by far. Posting a staggering 29.7 points, 7.5 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 2 steals per game, Lebron James can do absolutely anything on the court. If only he had a stronger supporting cast he would be the unanamous decision this year, however with the Cavs only at the middle of the pack in the East he will probably lose votes. Remember however that when Lebron was out of the line up his team lost a string of games, a factor that always looms large in voters minds. - Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, Dirk Norwitzki Three of the usual suspects when it comes the MVP trophy. All will be amongst the votes, and all will most likely be over-priced as none are having a career year and MVP voters will usually be influenced by wins or statistical outbursts. There is only any value in these players if their team can catch the Celtics for best record in the NBA. - Baron Davis, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Paul Pierce With these players we are talking about outside value, but probably more risk than chance of return. Chris Paul and Howard have had statistical outburst this year and have inturn led their teams to competitive records, but are probably still too young for serious consideration by the voters. In turn Baron Davis and Paul Pierce are having great seasons on decent teams, but will still most likely be unable to compete with some of the front runners identified. In concluding at this point you cannot go better than KG, Kobe and Lebron - with Kevin Garnett being the pick of the bunch at this stage. News CategoriesRSS xml feed
