Inter Milan is outstanding value in the Champions League2007-12-11
James Young
A match where emotions will ride high is the value contest this week in the UEFA Champions League. PSV Eindhoven have everything to play for and nothing to lose, but in order to progress to the knockout stage, they need to beat the in-form and scintillating Inter Milan at home, and hope other results go there way.
The Dutch champions are assured of European football whether they win or lose, but PSV coach Huub Stevens will have a steely determination to continue the proud clubs winning history and qualify for the prestigious Champions League tournament. They lost to the Nerazzurri at the San Siro, but will take heart from the fact that AC Milan is the only Italian club to have ever taken the full point's home from a trip to the Philips Stadion. There is a nervous wait on first team striker Danny Koevermans, who took his tally to nine goals with a brace against JC Roda midweek, but pulled his hamstring in training and is awaiting test results, while left-back Jan Kromkamp has already been ruled out with a knee injury. Internazionale have carried winning form wherever they have gone this season, five points atop of the Serie A and already assured of a Champions League berth. They possess talent all over the pitch with the potential to carry a killer blow through one fluid movement of the football. Zlatan Ibrahimović is tied on five goals with Cristiano Ronaldo for the title of lead scorer in the Group Stages; But the Swede will unfortunately be on the sidelines with a suspension. He will be amply replaced by the lightening quick David Suazo and the Argentinean legend Hernan Crespo Inter Milan should be far too strong for the Dutch Champions, with an astonishing $3.30 available at PartyBets. The other value match will take place at Ibrox Park where the feisty Rangers will take on the pride of France in Olympique Lyonnais in their shared pursuit of second place in Group E. Rangers hold the upper hand in this contest, as they beat Lyon comprehensively in France earlier this campaign and only need to avoid defeat to advance through to the knockout stages. They hold a formidable record at Ibrox Park, where AJ Auxerre is the last foreign side to prevail almost three years ago. Rangers will be without the services of the eternally injured Jean-Claude Darcheville, and goal-scoring winger Damarcus Beasley. It is unclear whether leading striker Nacho Novo will be available; but Lyon will be relieved if the incredibly fast and tricky striker is unavailable through injury. Rangers will need to take advantage of Lyon's fragile defense or leave their fate in the hands of Lyon's classy midfield. This is it for Olympique Lyonnais. The French Champions had fallen early; losing their first two matches and were written off by the media. They subsequently gathered themselves and won home and away against Stuttgart, and an inspired Juninho led them to a draw against Barcelona to keep their slim chances alive. Anything less than a win will leave them short, and they will need to do it against a team known for their ability to bunker and out hustle, outmuscle and continually frustrate when it has no obligation to play for anything other than a nil-all draw. They will be limited with Cris, Gregory Coupet, Patrick Muller and Fred all integral players of the team and all injured, but the team has had a renaissance as of late. They have scored thirty goals in twelve games since they last faced Rangers, and the attacking trio of Sydney Govou, Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa have simply been on fire, and aided by the offensive threat of Juninho they have taken all before them. This match could be one of epic proportions, or it could fizzle out as Rangers hold out for the draw. Being that as it may, I cannot see Rangers winning. The draw is enticing, but Lyon have the attacking power to break down the Rangers defence and I would take the odds of $2.30 on offer for the French Champions at PartyBets.
