Will England or South Africa take home the Webb Ellis Trophy?2007-10-16
Damien Oborne
The final of the Rugby World Cup is the pinnacle of a massive week in sport. Throughout the World Cup we have been treated to some unpredictable results. Will the final be another one?
I for one don't think so. The South Africans will be oozing confidence after demolishing England 36-0 in the group games. That win came on top of two other thrashing during 2007. South Africa handled the England side with a 58-10 whitewash at Bloemfontein and a 55-22 win in Pretoria. Although the England team they meet on Sunday will be a different proposition, its one that the Springboks look more than capable of handling. The loss of winger Josh Lewsey will also be tough for England to cover. Lewsey scored the first try in England's semi final win over France and would have been playing in his second World Cup Final. The form of the Springboks was very dangerous against the Pumas of Argentina. I expect them to carry the form over into the final. One thing is for sure, this game has the potential to be one to remember. England was exceptional in upsetting the Australian's and French. They will be going into the game chock full of confidence and hopeful of being the first team to win consecutive World Cup Trophies. The game for third takes place the day before the final. This will see the hometown French taking on the Argentines. The Pumas looked extremely nervous in the game of their lives against South Africa. The pressure will be there in this week's game against the French and it will be exposed by a lot of high balls. It will be important for France to get something out of their home World Cup. Although they can't win the Webb Ellis Trophy, a win against the Pumas will give them something out of the campaign. I like South Africa and France to win comfortably.
