Arsenal Show Class as the Top Two Stay Unchanged2007-01-15
Paul Sandells
Arsenal may have left their title challenge a little late this season. An impressive performance by Henry and co. on Saturday showed Arsene Wenger's men are still a force in the English game.
After Gilberto Silva was shown a red card with only 13 minutes on the clock things were not looking too great for Arsenal. An away trip to Blackburn is never an easy task, with ten men few teams would leave unhappy with a draw. Step forward Thierry Henry. After weeks of injury worries the Frenchman put on a performance "of old". A contender for goal of the season, by Henry, secured a 2-0 win for Arsenal and a rare smile in post match interviews by Arsene Wenger! Barring acts of God, the Premiership is out of reach for Arsenal this term. Manchester United and Chelsea won their respective home games as expected, to retain their huge leads. Next season, with an exciting number of youngsters in the squad, could be a very interesting one for Arsenal fans. United raced into a 3-0 lead against a hapless Aston Villa. Villa responded in the second half but a United in second gear was still too good as they ran out comfortable 3-1 winners. Few defences have shown such a lack of "hap" this season as Wigan's at Chelsea on Saturday. Error after error allowed Chelsea to run out 4-0 winners. It's not often that a 4-0 scoreline flatters the losing team. In this instance, where Chelsea could have run in 10 goals, Wigan got off lightly! So, it's as you were at the top of the Premiership. Manchester United remain 6 points clear with a big goal difference advantage over Chelsea. Bet365 keep the Red Devils at 8/15 to lift the title in this campaign with Chelsea at an almost backable 6/4! Liverpool and Arsenal attract quotes of around 66/1 with some firms going as high as 80/1. The battle at the tail of the Premiership continues to heat up. Watford and Charlton appear doomed but the race to avoid the third relegation spot is just as interesting as the race for the title itself. Sheffield United, despite a good run of picking up points of late, remain the bookmakers favourites after the bottom two. Bet365 price the Blades up at 5/6 for the drop. Hot on their heels are West Ham at 6/4 followed by Wigan at 10/3. Wigan could easily be sucked into the relegation fight unless their defence improves. Everton make the trip to the JJB Stadium next Sunday. Three points are a must for Paul Jewell's men if they are to stop the rot.
