Markets Open on Beckham's Future2007-01-11
Paul Sandells
Following the news from Spain that David Beckham will leave Real Madrid this summer, bookmakers have opened markets on where the former England captain is heading next. Surprisingly, America is the current hot favourite.
It seems the Beckham's love affair with Spain is coming to an end. After a turbulent season with Real Madrid, in which Beckham has made very few first team appearances, his Spanish employers have decided not to renew his contract this summer. Bookmakers reacted to the news with the opening of a "Where next?" market for Beckham. Coral think America will be the next stop for Becks and make 'the land of the free' the short priced 5/2 favourites. A shock return to the Premiership has not been ruled out, however. Newcastle United head the list of Premiership clubs who are tipped to make a move for Beckham. The Magpies are 6/1 with Coral to land the former Manchester United star. A return to Manchester United has been all but ruled out by Coral. Their spokesman said, "Chelsea and Manchester United could both afford him but probably won't want him so we reckon Newcastle is the English side most likely to want him and to be able to afford him." Bet Direct are even more certain Beckham will move to America. They quote him at 11/10 to join any US Major League team. A spokesman for Bet Direct said, "His own recent football certainly fits into a country where they have special teams, perhaps he could join the NFL and become the kicker for the Giants!"
