Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Preview2006-09-27
Paul Sandells
This Sunday sees the most prestigious French horse race on the racing calender take place at Longchamp. The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe looks like one of the most open betting races for years. Here is our preview.
Money has been attracted towards Pride for this years Arc. Despite being convincing beaten by more fancied runners and market leaders at this track earlier this month, namely Shirocco and Hurricane Run, punters have backed Pride down from 12/1 to 8/1 in places (although 10/1 is still on offer at Bet365 and Ladbrokes). The reason behind the confidence in the mare is most likely due to the win over Hurricane Run in June. Stan James can see the reason behind the confidence in Pride. Neil Morrice, spokesman for the sportsbook said, "Pride has beaten Hurricane Run and looked very much to be 'getting ready' for the Arc when third to Shirocco in the Prix Foy." Morrice expects Shirroco to drift before the gates open. "Shirocco is proving easier to back than either his stablemate or Deep Impact and could end up as big as 7/2." French ace Christophe Soumillon, who attracts unwarranted flack on British tracks for his riding style, looks set to take the ride on Shirocco. Further down the field, the outstanding Sixties Icon appears a great each way bet at 12/1 (in general). However, exchange backers at Betfair and Betdaq will find much larger odds at around 17/1. Whilst Pride may have good each way claims and be there or there-abouts, I feel Hurricane Run has the class and experience to win the race. As the price drifts a straight forward win bet becomes more and more appealing. Sixties Icon is my each way selection. The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe takes place on Sunday October 1st and is live on At The Races, Sky channel 415.
