'Gorgeous' George Red Hot for the Breeders Cup2006-09-26
Paul Sandells
George Washington has been installed as the short priced 7/4 favourite for the Breeders Cup. After destroying an impressive field last weekend, "Gorgeous" George Washington looked back to his best.
The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, last Saturday, saw the return to form of George Washington. The horse, touted as one of the best milers in the world, was under pressure to perform after recent poor showings. He didn't let his backers down. After trotting to post in a calm manner and sitting quietly in the stalls, it was looking ominous for his opponents even before the gates opened. Mick Kinane sat quietly on his mount throughout before exploding in the final furlong. Kinane never used his whip once yet his horse bolted to the front of the field, outclassing a group of very good race horses. Bookmakers were immediately impressed by George Washington's showing. William Hill installed him as 7/4 favourite for the Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs. Araafa, who managed to claim second in the Ascot race is available at 6/1. If George Washington can repeat his Ascot showing then Araafa will struggle to reverse the placings. The latest Breeders Cup odds are generally: 7-4 George Washington 4-1 Aragorn 6-1 Araafa, Iffraaj 10-1 Librettist 12-1 Gorella, Miesques Approval, Stormy River 14-1 Badge Of Silver 16-1 Ad Valorem, Charmo 20-1 Remarkable News, Silent Name 33-1 Ashkal Way, Three Valleys The Breeders Cup takes place on November 4th.
