Superleague - Wigan Revived But Who Will Be Relegated?2006-07-16
Paul Sandells
As rugby league legends Wigan pull themselves clear of relegation trouble, the question on many Superleague fans lips is, "Who will finish bottom of the league". Les Catalan Dragons cannot go down, so any relegation markets cannot include the newcomers. However, there are still four or five teams looking over their shoulders and there are plenty of interesting prices around for punters.
Few rugby league fans would have expected to see, the once mighty, Wigan holding up the rest of the Superleague at the mid-way point in the season. Yet, the men from the JJB were simply awful in the first half of the season and quite rightly deserved to be bottom of the stack. The introduction of coach Brian Noble and several high profile signings have turned things around for the "cherry & whites". Wigan are improving and now, taking future fixtures into account, look unlikely candidates for the drop. Our friends at Bet 365 have opened a market for the bottom side, without Les Catalan Dragons. Bet 365 also think Wigan are now unlikely to go down and have them priced up at 12/1 (13.0) to be bottom at the end of the campaign. Harlequins are an attractive looking 13/2 (7.5) but, the 'Quins are a strong outfit, only going down by 6 points against St.Helens in their last outing. With Henry Paul providing the class for 'Quins they should have enough in the tank to stay in Superleague for next season. Like Harlequins, Huddersfield probably have a little too much in their locker to face the drop. Their 11/2 (6.5) is attractive also but we feel this would be a speculative punt. The likely teams to be the bottom are Castleford and Wakefield. Cas' are not the team of old and have struggled in all but one or two games this season. At 7/2 (3.5) they appear good value. Bet 365 favourites for the bottom team are Wakefield. The Wildcats are 4/6 (1.66) with Bet 365 and this looks a fair price considering the recent form of the men from Yorkshire. Superleague form can change in one game, teams, like Wigan, who are struggling can suddenly come good and win four or five games on the trot. Time is running out for Wakefield and co. with only a handful of games until the season ends and The Grand Final games begins. 4/6 could look like a very big price a few games down the line.
