The Carling Cup Betting Preview: Liverpool vs Arsenal

Liverpool and Arsenal have struggled to compete with rivals Chelsea and Manchester United in the league this season. Despite Champions League progress, the lesser two from the "big four" will be looking towards the Carling Cup for silverware in this campaign.

Liverpool and Arsenal have had some amazing battles in seasons gone by as both teams have pushed for honours on several fronts. This match-up is often an unpredictable affair, however tonight's game is, perhaps, a little easier for punters.

Arsenal travel to Anfield with what can only be described as a "second string" team. Almunia, Djourou, Walcott, Song, Denilson, Randall, Traore, Aliadiere, Connolly, Garry and Perez are all set to get chances. On the other hand, Liverpool are rumoured to have a full strength squad available for Rafa Benitez's selection.

With home advantage and some recent good results behind them, Liverpool are the no-brainer selection for outright victory here. But, do you really want to back Liverpool against Arsenal, even with a much weakened team, at 8/11? with Blue Square Well, if you like to back odds-on chances, this is probably your safest punt today.

Arsenal's youngsters will want to impress Arsene Wenger in an attempt to gain more first team action. While a win at Anfield may be a little far fetched, a draw is not out of the question at 12/5 with Blue Square if Liverpool stutter in front of goal. To qualify, in extra-time or after penalties, Arsenal are 2/1 and Liverpool an uninspiring 4/11.

Can we find value here? The handicap and Half-time/Full-time markets could provide an answer. Liverpool at -1 on the handicap are 21/10 and on the Half-time/Full-time market, 7/4. I'll be taking both of these prices for this game as I expect Liverpool to knock out Arsenal with ease.
