Premiership Title Betting Update2006-11-20
Paul Sandells
Another blistering weekend of Premiership football ended with bookmakers declaring the title is now a two horse race. Wins for table toppers Manchester United and Chelsea saw them extend their lead over nearest betting rivals Arsenal.
Manchester United and Chelsea have built up over 30 Premiership points each already this season. The two top flight giants, seemingly, stretch further away from the chasing pack after each Premiership match. United came from 1-0 behind at Sheffield United to run out 1-2 winners. Wayne Rooney, looking match and physically fit, inspired Fergie's men to perform outstandingly. Indeed, if it wasn't for a glaring miss by Cristiano Ronaldo and heroics from the Blades 'keeper Paddy Kenny the scoreline would surely have been very much worse for Neil Warnock's team. Chelsea continue to chase United all the way. The Blues never left 2nd gear as they cruised by West Ham in a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge. West Ham had chances to shock the current champs. Only the poor direction of a header, in the last minute, from Anton Ferdinand saved Chelsea's blushes. The "big four" appear to be dwindling down to the "big two" these days. Arsenal could only scrape a draw against Newcastle at home after a stunning free-kick strike from Henry. The Gunners are now 12 points off the pace and bookmakers make them 16/1 to lift the Premiership trophy this season. Liverpool went on their travels to Middlesbrough on Saturday. The words "Liverpool" and "away game" strike fear into many of the Anfield faithful. Rafa Benitez's boys are performing terribly on the road this season. Those who coughed up their hard earned cash for this pay-per-view game were not in for a treat. The 0-0 final scoreline reflected this dour game perfectly, Liverpool were clearly on top for long periods but the lack of clear cut chances and their inability to break down 'Boro will be a big worry for Benitez. Liverpool are 16 points off the pace now and a huge 100/1 to win the league this year. Even this price, after the latest showing, looks pretty short! So, barring some miracles from Arsenal or one of the other chasing teams, we are down to two for the title already and it's still only November. Chelsea are still favorites and slightly odds-on at 8/13 despite being 3 points behind Manchester United. United are available at 5/4 and 11/8 in places. Both teams face each other at Old Trafford next weekend in what is sure to be an explosive encounter. Naturally, Sports Betting Poker News will have an in-depth preview of this game later in the week.
