NFL Week 13 Betting Preview2006-11-30
Richard Prew
Week 12 saw one close struggle between two powerhouses from the different conferences as, in an error strewn game, the Patriots overcame the Bears in the fourth quarter. Whilst the Bears have the best record in the NFC at 9-2 doubts remain about the potency of their offence, which they will surely need in at least one play-off game to make it to the Super-bowl. This leaves the way open for other NFC teams to challenge but in the most remarkable result of the week the NFC East leading New York Giants squandered a 21-0 lead to the also ran Tennessee Titans to lose 24-21 on a last second field goal. It remains the case that the AFC conference has more strength in depth and the more likely chance of winning the
Super-bowl as we enter the final stretch of the regular season.
Week 13 sees two contests that strike me as interesting betting mediums. Firstly there is a key clash in the NFC East where the Dallas Cowboys travel to meet the Giants at the Meadowlands. This result will go a long way to determining the divisional winners. Dallas have had a dramatic improvement since the installation of Tony Romo as the team's quarterback five and a half games ago. Indeed they are a last minute blocked field goal away from being 5-0 since then. Meanwhile as mentioned above the Giants choked last week. The Cowboys now lead the division 7-4, one game ahead of the 6-5 Giants. However this game is played in New York, likely in cold temperatures and is set to be extremely close. The odds setters are pricing the home team Giants at a best priced 24/13 for this contest which looks entirely based on the sudden dip in form in the last fortnight. I think the price is too long. The Giants remain talented, they must win and are likely to severely want to exorcise last week's demons. It's a decent price and a value upset bet. Secondly the Atlanta Falcons (5-6) visit the 3-8 Washington Redskins. For the Redskins the season is virtually over, and another off-season of recriminations awaits. The Falcons must win to stay in touch for at least a wild card berth. The Falcons are talented, especially Michael Vick at quarterback but maddeningly inconsistent. This is especially the case at Receiver where three first round draft picks drop a lot of easy balls. However if they put it together they are a far more talented team than the Redskins yet are priced at odds against. I think the correct price is odds on and thus it is good value.
