USPGA - The TPC at Summerlin2006-10-11
Greg Hill
The USPGA tour goes to Summerlin, Las Vegas this week for the final official ranking tournament of the year - the frys.com TPC. The Tournament Players Club (TPC) course is a fantastic purpose built golf arena designed and made for the spectator and player alike with uninhibited views of the action from tee to green, which should make for a fantastic finale to the official USPGA season.
A winter break seems to be the priority for most of the World's best golfers, which means great value and huge prices in the field, which is as about as open as it can get. There is only one clear favourite this week, which is world number 2 Jim Furyk, whose octopus-like swing has propelled him up the rankings in recent months. The unconventional American who has won twice already this season, has had three career wins and six career top tens playing in Las Vegas and has only been placed outside of the top ten once this season since the US Open in June so has phenomenal form and credentials, which is understandably why he is priced so short at a best available 4.2/1 with Pinnacle Sports. His nearest rivals in the betting are Ryan Moore and Chris DiMarco at 25/1 with Bluesq and Arron Oberholser, who is priced at 33/1 with Betfred. Moore has had back to back 6th places in his last two events, including last weeks tournament at Greensboro and he was in contention here last year after two rounds but blew his chances by posting a big number in round three so providing he can maintain his form and his calm for 72 holes he will be in with a chance. DiMarco is a quality player who will always be a threat in any USPGA event so he cannot be discounted; however he hasn't had the best of form in very recent weeks and hasn't appeared in this event for three years so he doesn't exactly have course and distance or form for this one. There are some big prices on some big quality players here this week, so the value hunters will be pleased. US Ryder Cup players Chad Campbell and Scott Verplank are both available at 40/1 with bet365 and Coral and with most firms offering ¼ of the odds on an each way top five finish there is real benefit in identifying those competitors that are priced too high in relation to their capabilities and potential for a place finish. Verplank also loves to compete in Vegas and has a good record here; - he hasn't missed the cut in his last nine Vegas starts, a record which dates back to 1995. European star and long time leader of the European Order of Merit David Howell is 50/1 with Bet365 – he is more than capable of at least a top 5 here this week. Billy Andrade isn't a name you would normally tout for a performance on any given week on the USPGA tour but this week is slightly different. He is amongst the top 4 money winners in Las Vegas golf history so he could feel right at home this week, so 100/1 with Total Bet is probably way too much value to ignore for some each way interest. Also amongst the leading Las Vegas golf money winners is Bob Estes who Coral are offering 80/1 on for victory – again great value in a sport where course and distance and venue familiarity can mean a lot. Last years surprise play off winner over Jim Furyk was Wes Short Jnr; - he is again unfancied at 225/1 with Sky Bet but you never know at golf strange things can happen. One thing is for sure though he will have his work cut out this week if he is to overcome the man he pipped to the post last year and if he finishes one shot ahead of Furyk again then its more than likely it will be enough to take the title.
