Golf – USPGA Tour: The FUNAI Classic2006-10-19
Greg Hill
As the end of the season nears for golf's USPGA Tour, 144 of the World's top players head for Disney World and the $4.6m FUNAI Classic.
Tiger Woods is missing again this week as he was last week, which will obviously prevent him from adding to his six straight victories, but it does however create a hugely open field for betting purposes. 2004 winner and world number 5, Vijay Singh is the bookies favourite for this event and understandably so. The giant Fijian is very rarely outside of the contenders in any event he enters and he has course and distance here at the Disney Resort. Bluesq and VC Bet are both offering 10/1 on a Vijay victory, which is the best available price on the favourite. Davis Love is the man in form at the moment and he also has good history at this event, therefore he is understandably the second favourite for victory in this event. Love has twice finished runner-up at this tournament and has five top-5 finishes here at the Disney Resort, including his last appearance here as recently as 2003. He is also running well at the moment – he managed victory at The Greensboro Classic at the very start of this month so is definitely one to watch this week. The best available price on Love is 18/1 with VC Bet although most firms are pricing him at 16/1 so be careful which firm you make your selection with. If you're looking for something that is going to provide a little more interest then there a few firms offering prices on a top 10 finish. Stan James and Sky Bet in particular are offering some good prices on a lot of the competitors. Vijay Singh is obviously the short-priced favourite but he is priced at odds against at 5/4 with both firms to finish in the top 10, which I feel is excellent value. Vijay is the ultimate consistent performer and no player has made more top ten finishes than him this year on the US tour. Davis Love is slightly longer at 13/8 with Sky Bet but again, he is one of the outstanding quality names in this field and will surely be god value for money to finish in the top ten - especially at this price. Lucas Glover headed the field last year to take the title with a closing round of 65, which included birdies at the final two holes to close out Tom Pernice Jnr by a shot to take his first ever PGA Tour victory. Glover is fancied again this year by most of the bookmakers; for a past champion and the third listed favourite 20/1 with bet365 has to be good value. The man he edged out on the final day of last year's tournament Tom Pernice Jnr is one of the outsiders this year but horses for courses is something to take into account in the world of golf so there has to be some value here at 53/1 with Pinnacle sports – and with most bookmakers offering ¼ of the odds on a top five finish there is even more value in the each way selection. Justin Rose is the favourite at 4/1 with sporting odds to be the top European in this event and understandably so; he has shown great promise in recent weeks in a time where European golf has been very much focused on home shores and in particular on the Ryder Cup, Rose has been quietly going about his business on the US Tour making a name for himself, putting in some good performances and racking up some decent finishes. Carl Petterson and Greg Owen are his main rivals in this market, who are both priced at 6/1 with Stan James. They should both go close this week but on recent form I can't see past Rose for top European in this tournament. Good Luck with your selections!
