ATP Top 20 Joy for Henman, a 7/1 Shot2006-10-06
Paul Sandells
Tim Henman's return to form has forced Ladbrokes to open a market on a Britain returning to the ATP rankings top 20. Henman, currently playing in the Japan Open has improved his game throughout the year, a good result in Japan could see his price slashed further.
If you really fancy Henman to hit a hot patch of form before 2007, then you can get 50/1 with Ladbrokes that the Oxford born player will reach the top ten. More likely is the 7/1 quoted for a top twenty return. A Ladbrokes spokesman said, "This could be the start of an Indian summer for Henman. The former British number one has been largely written off. But he's beginning to gather momentum. Whilst not the player he was a few years ago 'Tiger' Tim still commands respect from his opponents." Sportsbooks with markets open for the BBC Sports Personality of The Year award have slashed Henman's price to pick up the coverted title. Henman is now available at 100/1 from 250/1. However, if Henman collects the BBC's title at the end of the year, it won't just be the bookmakers who fall off their chairs in shock. Sports Betting Poker News recommends you do not waste your money backing Henman in this market at any price. Nick Weinberg from Ladbrokes agreed, "It would be one of the biggest shocks of all time if Henman was to land the gong come December. But we've been forced to revise our prices after a number of punters came on for Henman." Henman plays in the semi finals of the AIG Japan Open on Saturday. Tim looks good to make the final here. Lee, his opponent will struggle to contain Henman in this form. The 4/9 for Henman with Ladbrokes seems about right. Meanwhile, in the other semi, Federer continues to run over all in front of him. The great man is as short at 1/33 to win his semi final against Becker. A price of 1/14 for Fed' to win the tournament outright also seems about right, despite the price being incredibly short! Henman is running hot right now, however and if he can re-discover his very best form he could push Federer all the way.
